Beth from the event center security called Jane back shortly after Jane got home. She jumped right into her purpose before Jane could even say hello.
âIâm a bit frazzled, to be perfectly frank. I think you might know why.â
âBecause Del wasnât supposed to be at work, even though he was there?â
âThat would be it. Heâs on administrative leaveâa disciplinary actionâI donât even know what he did.â
âWhy was he pretending to be at work?â Jane perched on the edge of her seat, pen in hand. This call couldnât have come at a better time. She could get all of her Del questions answered and then compare the Del situation with the Miter family. If she was lucky, she wouldnât have to follow up with the questions about Michelleâs time with the HLP at all.
âIt was a shift we were working together. We had plans for the day. Dumb little things you do when youâre dating a coworker. He would bring me coffee, I would page him to the office for a kiss. Just dumb stuff. But if he didnât come, heâd have to tell me why.â
âWhat about the person who was supposed to cover his shift?â
âThatâs a good question too.â Beth sounded exhausted. âThat person seems to have colluded with Del on this little scheme, and now heâs on admin leave tooâ¦guess who has to cover all of their shifts?â
âThat would be you.â Jane chuckled sympathetically.
âYup. And I donât have time for it. But I canât turn it down.â
âHow many of you are there in security?â
âAbout a dozen,â Beth said. âMore like ten now, though. And thatâs hardly enough. Youâve seen the place. Itâs huge. And itâs open crazy hours.â
âWhat did Del do to get in trouble?â
âHe wonât tell me, so itâs got to be bad. Heâs acting all heroic about it like heâs protecting me, but thatâs stupid. Weâve been together seven months now. He can tell me anything.â
Seven months. Jane stifled a smirk. Practically married. âWhat are you going to do now?â
âWork too much, I guess. I donât want to be a jerk to my boyfriend at Christmas, but I need a little space if heâs not going to be honest with me.â
âIs Del from around here?â
âSure. Heâs from Gladstone. Heâs always lived here.â
Gladstone? That little suburb wasnât too far from Trillium Montessoriâ¦basically just across the river, if Jane was picturing it right. âHow old is he?â
âSee, thatâs the other thing, older guys are supposed to be mature, responsible. Del is thirty-two, but heâs acting like heâs twelve.â
Thirty-twoâ¦Jane considered that. He was just, almost, young enough to have been in the first class at Trillium. On the other handâ¦he was also old enough to have a kid that went there. âDoes Del have family in town? Parents, brother or sister? Kids?â
âYeah, sure. His parents are here. He also has a brother who lives in Seattle. No kids.â
No kids⦠âSo what do you think Del did to get in trouble at work?â
Beth sighed. âHonestly? I hate to even
